Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at  info@westlapilates.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Anyone can do Pilates. Really! Pilates is challenging, safe and appropriate for all ages and fitness levels. Whether your objective is to prevent injury, enhance athletic performance or to increase strength and flexibility, the method is a great fit for everyone. As comprehensively trained instructors, we know how to teach to the individual and can help you reach your goals.

While Pilates may not be the most effective form of exercise for weight loss, it can help you tone and strengthen your muscles, which can improve your overall body composition.

In your first class at West LA Pilates, after you fill out a liability form and pay for your lesson, your instructor will guide you through the basics and help you become familiar with the equipment.  Ease into a relaxing but challenging Pilates workout.  You will move your spine in all different directions, stretch your tight muscles in a safe way and engage your deep core muscles such as your abs, back and hips.  You will even feel muscles you never knew you had!

Yes, Pilates can be very effective at relieving back pain by improving posture, strengthening core muscles, and increasing flexibility and mobility.   Pilates was originally developed for rehab during the 1940's so it is considered a low-impact and medium intensity workout that is easily adapted to all levels.

At your first visit we will have you complete a brief medical history form and waiver so we can learn more about your needs. Pilates is safe exercise, and we are cautious and careful in our approach. We are accustomed to working with clients who have back, knee, and shoulder injuries, for example, and we see many clients with spinal abnormalities, such as scoliosis, since Pilates works to restore alignment and strengthen the muscles that support the spine. If you are concerned about your ability to exercise, be sure to ask your doctor before starting a new exercise regime.

Wear comfortable exercise clothing and nothing too loose, as we need to see your movement patterns and correct form. For hygiene purposes, please wear socks during your sessions. Grip socks are also available for purchase at the studio.

Yes, most of Pilates includes hands-on corrections and adjustments by the instructor to encourage better alignment and a deeper mind-body connection. This is not usually shown online but traditionally hands-on was a big part of the original work.  We won't touch you without your consent so please let the instructor know if you'd prefer no hands-on for the lesson.

There is free street parking on Westwood Blvd but watch out for street cleaning on Monday and Tuesday mornings.  We have spots in the back parking lot on nights and weekends if you need to park closer to the building.

We take Zelle, Venmo, Apple Pay, Visa, MC, Discover, Check, and CASH

Thank you for respecting our 24 hour cancellation policy for all class sessions and appointments. Late cancellations under 24 hours will be charged the full price of the session.

Call, text or email the studio with appointment availability concerns. We will be happy to help find a session time that works for you.

We recommend 1-3 times a week, depending on your schedule and goals. Once your body is conditioned to the work, Pilates is safe to do every day, but we think balance in all things is important. Trying to fill your off days with cardiovascular exercise or other activities you enjoy will create a nice balance.
